Contemporary Art as a Platform for Cultural Dialogue and International Exchange
From 14–17 May 2026, the 9th edition of Art Thessaloniki International Contemporary Fair returns to the vibrant cultural landscape of Thessaloniki, reaffirming the city’s position as one of Southeast Europe’s most dynamic meeting points for contemporary art and international cultural exchange.
Organised by TIF-HELEXPO in collaboration with founder and artistic director Pantelis Tsatsis, Art Thessaloniki has evolved far beyond the traditional framework of a commercial art fair. Today, the fair increasingly functions as an international cultural platform — a place where artistic practice, intellectual exchange, curatorial collaboration and social reflection converge.
At its core lies the belief that contemporary art should not merely be presented to a market, but should actively contribute to cultural dialogue, mutual understanding and international connectivity.

More Than a Conventional Art Fair
Over recent years, Art Thessaloniki has successfully brought together galleries, museums, collectors, curators, publishers, artist initiatives and cultural institutions from Greece and abroad. Participants from the Balkans, Turkey, Germany, China, Russia and the United States contribute to a uniquely international atmosphere in which artistic presentation is closely linked to professional exchange and cultural discourse.
This expanded orientation clearly distinguishes Art Thessaloniki from many conventional art fairs. Alongside gallery presentations, the programme includes museum collaborations, independent art projects, curated thematic exhibitions, lectures, panel discussions and presentations dedicated to artistic research and cultural reflection.
The fair increasingly positions itself as a space in which contemporary artistic practices are not isolated objects of display, but become part of larger social, historical and cultural conversations.

Honoured Artists 2026: Vana Xenou and Aspasia Papadoperaki
Particular attention within the 2026 edition is dedicated to the “Honoured Artists” programme, which celebrates distinguished artistic careers through specially curated presentations.
This year’s honoured artists include Vana Xenou and Aspasia Papadoperaki, both of whom represent highly individual and significant voices within contemporary Greek art. Their work reflects the diversity, depth and evolving international relevance of Greece’s contemporary cultural landscape.

NEW Feminism — Contemporary Female Perspectives Beyond Division
A particularly important contribution to Art Thessaloniki 2026 is the pilot project NEW Feminism, realised by Global Galleries in cooperation with Artforum Hellas, Artforum Culture Foundation, and Winter Stiftung Hamburg.
Rather than revisiting polarising or ideological confrontations, NEW Feminism approaches feminism as a contemporary cultural reality grounded in equality, dignity and mutual respect. The project is based on a simple but essential principle: equal rights and equal opportunities should no longer be perceived as exceptional demands, but as a natural foundation of modern democratic society.
At the centre of the project lies the recognition that female artistic perspectives contribute indispensable insights into culture, identity, memory and social transformation. The participating artists do not speak “against” society, but actively contribute to it through independent perception, creative intelligence and cultural sensitivity.
The project therefore seeks not separation, but dialogue — encouraging audiences to engage seriously with female perspectives, to respect them, and equally important, to learn from them.
Featured artists include Jana Dettmer, LEONI (A. Jäckel) and Corinna Zieleke, whose works explore contemporary realities through highly individual artistic languages. Accompanying the exhibition, an informational publication has been released in English and Greek.
Within the broader framework of Art Thessaloniki, NEW Feminism represents an important cultural statement: contemporary art can become a platform where plurality, equality and shared human experience are understood not as opposites, but as mutually enriching forces.
Supporting Emerging Artists: MATAROA
Another important component of the fair is the MATAROA Project, now entering its fifth year. Developed in cooperation with the Cultural Society of Entrepreneurs of Northern Greece (PEEBE), the initiative is dedicated to supporting young artists up to the age of 33.
MATAROA creates visibility, institutional recognition and professional orientation for emerging artistic positions within Greece, while simultaneously fostering exchange between younger generations and established cultural networks.
The project underlines the broader mission of Art Thessaloniki: to strengthen sustainable artistic ecosystems and encourage long-term cultural development beyond purely commercial structures.

Thessaloniki as an International Cultural Meeting Point
Located within the modern halls of TIF-HELEXPO International Exhibition & Congress Center, only moments away from Thessaloniki’s waterfront and the White Tower, the fair continues to reinforce the city’s role — first internationally highlighted during its year as European Capital of Culture 1997 — as a major centre of contemporary cultural exchange.
Today, Art Thessaloniki has become far more than a traditional exhibition format. It increasingly functions as a multidimensional cultural meeting space connecting artists, galleries, institutions, collectors and audiences through shared artistic experience and international dialogue.
At a time when many art fairs risk being reduced to purely economic mechanisms, Art Thessaloniki demonstrates that contemporary art can simultaneously serve as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, education and social reflection — reaffirming the enduring importance of culture within an open and internationally connected society.
