Art Thessaloniki 2025 (8th Edition): A Cultural Turning Point
In mid-May, Thessaloniki once again transformed into a vibrant cultural hub as it hosted the 8th edition of the Art Thessaloniki International Contemporary Art Fair from 15–18 May 2025—an especially meaningful year marking the fair’s 10th anniversary.
Under the steady leadership of Pantelis Tsatsis, the event was firmly positioned at the crossroads of Southeastern and broader Europe, weaving together galleries, artists, collectors, curators, and institutions—from Greece and the Balkans to Asia and the USA—into a rich tapestry of artistic dialogue

Global Reach, Local Resonance
With over 70 galleries and independent projects, Art Thessaloniki offered a compelling mix of media and cultural voices. Highlights included impressive museum-level presentations and satellite contributions from collectors across Brussels, New York, Skopje, and even Greenland .
Anchored at the TIF‑HELEXPO fair grounds, the event underscored Thessaloniki’s growing importance as a regional cultural nexus, thanks to its historic legacy, vibrant university sector, and young energy
Celebrating Artistic Excellence
This year’s edition honoured two exceptional artists:
-
Michelangelo Pistoletto, a master of Arte Povera, whose career-spanning works—including his mirror installations—were showcased in a powerful retrospective .
-
Panagiotis Tanimanidis, a cherished Greek sculptor, whose sculptural language was brought into focus.
The recognition of these figures was more than symbolic—it embodied the fair’s commitment to both historical influence and contemporary relevance.

Empowering Emerging Artists
The MATAROA Awards, back for another year, continued to elevate artists under 33. With prizes ranging from €1,500 to multiple €500 grants, the initiative underscored the fair’s intent to uplift rising voices—a mission central to its identity

Strengthening Regional Bonds
Art Thessaloniki excelled in fostering cross-border cooperation:
-
Panel partnerships that extended from Sofia Art Fair to MoBU Bucharest, reaffirming the fair’s commitment to regional Synergy
These interconnections boost not only artistic exchange but also collective visibility across the Balkans.
Artforum Culture Foundation: Cultural Partner
The Artforum Culture Foundation, a private European non-profit based in Thessaloniki with branches in Athens, Cologne and New York, continued its engagement with this year’s edition as well.
As a long-standing cultural partner, the foundation has remained involved through selected contributions such as:
-
Strengthening the fair’s global presence
-
Presenting curated exhibitions and publishing endeavours
-
Supporting a growing network of independent artists
-
Connecting with museums and collections worldwide
Upcoming plans include its reconstitution as a non-profit foundation—a move set to further enhance global visibility and cultural impact.

Sustainability & Community Engagement
Parallel to the main fair, the Forward Green Expo featured CIRCULAR ART, highlighting creative works made from recycled materials—an inventive nod to sustainability.
The presence of a charity auction, including support for Guide Dogs Greece, further underscored Art Thessaloniki’s growing role as a socially engaged arts platform.

Anchoring the Future: A Platform with Global Reach
Thessaloniki is no longer just a stop on the art calendar — it is emerging as a cultural catalyst for Southeastern Europe, opening new channels to art-engaged regions across the Middle East, the Turkic world, and the global Greek diaspora. With its unique position at the crossroads of continents and cultures, the city is steadily becoming a place where tradition meets innovation — and where international collectors, curators, and institutions increasingly turn their gaze.
